Omakkaya Payar Koottaan
It is a quick and easy curry prepared within minutes and tastes awesome. It goes well with boiled rice.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1 nos Omakkaya Pappaya, Green
- 1 cup Payar (White/Red or both together) Soak the Payar for about 3 hours so that it can — cook easily, cowpea
- 1 – Red Chilli Powder
- 1 Tspn Turmeric Powder
- Salt, to taste
- 5 – Curry leaves
- 2 Tspns Coconut Oil
Preparation
Step 1
Peel the Omakkaaya, cut it into small pieces and wash the pieces in normal water.
Step 2
Change the Omakkaaya (Pappaya) pieces into a cooking vessel/pressure cooker along with the soaked Payar (cowpea) and add Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder and required quantity of water and salt.
Step 3
Cook the mix for about 20 – 25 minutes or as needed, in medium flame.
Step 4
After cooking the mix properly, turn off the heat and change the Koottaan to a serving vessel and add the Curry leaves and Coconut oil and stir it for 2 – 3 minutes (for getting more taste and flavour you can add grinded Coconut along with some Onion and Cumin seeds in this koottaan before adding Curry leaves and Coconut oil).
Step 5
Omakkaaya (Pappaya, Green) and Payar (Cowpea) Koottaan is ready. This is a good side dish for Chappathi/Poori/cooked rice etc.
Tip
Coconut oil is the default cooking fat in Kerala kitchens. It adds a depth of flavour that other oils simply cannot match in these recipes.
