Vazhapindi Kootaan
Vazhaapindi or Banana Stem Kootaan is a styled vegetarian side dish, very popular in South Indian homes that go well with hot rice. Vazhapindi is cooked with toor dal and other spicy ingredients.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 250 g Cleaned and cut pieces of Vazhapindi Approx., inner portion of Plantain Stem
- 1 cup Thuvara Parippu Redgram Dhall
- 3 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- Salt, to taste
- 2 tsp Red Chilli Powder
- Coconut along with Cumin seeds and water — ground
- 5 nos Curry leaves
- 5 nos Red Chilli pieces
- 3 tsp Coconut/Refined Oil
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Vazhapindi Koottaan, wash the Vazhapindi pieces and Thuvara parippu and change them into a cooking vessel/pressure cooker. Add Red Chilli powder, Turmeric powder and Salt also.
Step 2
Add required quantity of water also over the Pressure cooker/cooking vessel and cook the Vaazhappindi pieces and Thuvara parippu (if it is cooked in the Pressure cooker, it will take about 10 minutes).
Step 3
When the Vazhapindi pieces and Thuvara parippu are cooked well, turn off the heat and after some time, add the ground Coconut into this cooked mix.
Step 4
Heat the oil in a Frying pan/Cheenachatty, fry mustard seeds, curry leaves and Red Chilli pieces in this Oil and add it into the cooked Koottan and stir it well.
Step 5
Vaazhappindi Koottaan is ready. This Koottaan will be very To eat with Poori/Chappathi/Cooked rice etc.
Tip
Let the dish rest for a few minutes after cooking. Flavours settle and meld during this time, and the texture often improves.
