Vazhakka / Raw Banana Mezhukkupuratti
Simple, honest, and on every Kerala lunch plate — banana thoran is coconut oil, grated coconut, and a handful of spices working quietly together. No fuss, just good food.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1/2 kg Raw banana
- 1 nos Onion
- 1 tbsp Chilli flakes
- 3 Cloves garlic
- 1 tsp Turmeric
- Salt, as needed
- 1 tsp Mustard
- Curry leaves, a few
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Vazhakka / Raw Banana Mezhukkupuratti, cook raw banana pieces with turmeric powder and salt.
Step 2
Drain and set aside.
Step 3
Crush onion, chilli flakes and garlic.
Step 4
Heat oil, let the mustard seeds crackle. Add curry leaves.
Step 5
Add crushed onion mixture and fry for few minutes.
Step 6
Add cooked banana and stir fry for few minutes.
Step 7
Vazhakka / Raw Banana Mezhukkupuratti is ready. Serve hot with rice.
Tip
The pan should be completely dry when you finish — no moisture should remain. That dryness is what gives thoran its characteristic texture.
