Ulli Mulak Beef
The fiery flavors of Ulli Mulak Beef – a Kerala-style spicy beef dish made with shallots and chilly powder, perfect with parotta or rice.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1/2 kg Beef
- 2 tbsp Coconut oil
- Curry leaves, a few
- 1 cup Shallots
- 1 tbsp Ginger and garlic — crushed
- 2 tbsp Kashmirichillypowder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp Garam masala powder
- 1/2 cup Water
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Heat the oil in a a pressure cooker and add curry leaves, shallots, ginger and garlic. cook for one minute.
Step 2
Add cleaned beef into it.
Step 3
Add masala powders and salt to taste.
Step 4
Stir everything together thoroughly with your hand.
Step 5
Pressure let it go for 7-8 whistles or until done.
Step 6
Ulli Mulak Beef is ready.

Pressure cooking first saves time, but do not skip the dry-roasting step after — that is where the Kerala beef fry gets its signature dark, caramelised crust.
