Raw Banana Erisseri | Kaya Erisseri
An everyday accompaniment from Kerala kitchens — nothing complicated, just honest cooking with good ingredients and the right spices. Always better than it looks.
Ingredientsfor 6 servings
- 2 nos Raw banana
- 1 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- Salt, to taste
- 1 cup Water
- 1/2 cup Coconut
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 3 tbsp Coconut — grated
- 2 tbsp Coconut oil
- 5 nos Shallots — chopped
- 3 nos Dried red chilly
- Curry leaves, a few
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
Preparation
Step 1
Peel and cut the banana into small cubes. Wash it repeatedly to get rid off the thick sap.
Step 2
Add the washed banana pieces to the cooker and add chilly powder, turmeric powder and salt to taste.
Step 3
Add water, cover and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
Step 4
In the mean time add the grated coconut into blender jar along with cumin seeds. Grind it to make a coarse paste.
Step 5
When the pressure releases add the cooked banana into a pan and add curry leaves.
Step 6
Add the ground coconut mix and Fold everything together gently. Bring to a gentle boil and take it off the heat.
Step 7
Finally, Heat the oil in a kadai and let the mustard seeds crackle. Add chopped shallots, curry leaves, dried red chilly and grated coconut.
Step 8
Fry till the coconut turns nice brown in color.
Step 9
Add it into the prepared curry and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 10
Delicious Raw banana Erisseri is ready.
Tip
Coconut oil is the default cooking fat in Kerala kitchens. It adds a depth of flavour that other oils simply cannot match in these recipes.
