Traditional Tomato Sadam
A traditional Kerala sweet snack made with care and a generous hand of ghee. The kind of thing grandmothers make for festivals and grandchildren make excuses to visit for.
Ingredientsfor 2 servings
- 3/4 cup Raw white rice
- 1 cup Tomato — chopped
- 1/2 cup Onion — sliced
- 2 nos Green chillies — sliced
- 1/2 tsp Ginger — minced
- 2 nos Dry red chillies cut in half
- 1/2 Dsp Black gram dhal parippu (Uzhunnu)
- 6 nos Pepper corns finely — crushed
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- Curry leaves, a few
- Coriander leaves — chopped
- 1 Dsp Ghee
- Oil, to taste
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing traditional tomato sadam, first Heat the oil in a pan and fry mustard seeds, black gram dhal, broken dry red chillies and curry leaves.
Step 2
Add onion pieces, ginger and green chillies. cook well.
Step 3
Add tomato pieces and required salt. cook until tomato pieces are crushed into a paste form.
Step 4
Meanwhile, boil 1 1 /2 cup water and add the cleaned rice. Cover with a lid and cook rice until done.
Step 5
Mix the tomato paste to the cooked rice and add a dash of fresh ghee for a better flavor.
Step 6
Traditional tomato sadam, a And quick dish is ready. Serve hot garnished with coriander leaves.
Tip
Jaggery burns easily. Melt it on low heat and always strain it to remove grit before adding it to the mixture.
