Traditional Kerala Ulli Theeyal
It is a tasty recipe.I learned this recipe from my mom.Iam a lover of nadan dishes and try to make kerala theeyal.
Ingredientsfor 1 servings
- 1 cup Small onions
- 2 tsp Red chilli powder
- 2 tsp Coriander powder
- 6 Curry leaves
- 1/2 cup Coconut — grated
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 3 Dry red chilli
- 2 tsp Coconut oil
- 1 tsp Mustard
- 2 tsp Salt
- 2 Tomato — chopped
Preparation
Step 1
Heat the oil in akadai and add sliced onions.cook until they become golden colour.
Step 2
Next, add tomatoes,chilli and curry leaves to this.Let it cook for 2 minutes.and set aside.
Step 3
Heat another kadai add grated coconut and fry for few minutes.
Step 4
Add turmeric powder,coriander powder and chilli powder to this and Let it cook for 2 minutes.
Step 5
Fry for few minutes until coconut turns golden colour.
Step 6
Allow mix to cool after that grind it in a mixer with enough water to make smooth paste.
Step 7
Add this ground mix to onion tomato mix.
Step 8
Put 1/2cup water to this and let it bubble for 2 minutes until gravy becomes thick.Add salt also and mix all together and let it bubble for 2 more minutes.
Step 9
Now ulli theeyal is ready to serve.
Tip
Coconut oil is the default cooking fat in Kerala kitchens. It adds a depth of flavour that other oils simply cannot match in these recipes.
