Traditional Chembu Theeyal
A traditional preparation from Kerala that balances flavour, texture, and aroma in the way that only home cooking can. No two households make it exactly the same, and that is the point.
Ingredientsfor 2 servings
- Chembu — cut into small cubes- 1 cup
- 1/2 cup Coconut — grated
- 2 Onion
- 2 Tomato
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Mustard
- 5 Curry leaf
- 4 Chilly
- 2 Red chillydry
- 4 Green chilly
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Mustard
- 1 tsp Oil
Preparation
Step 1
Warm the oil in a kadai add onions and green chilly Let it cook for 2 minutes.
Step 2
Add dry red chilli and boiled chembu to this.Let it cook for 2 minutes.
Step 3
Add tomatoes to this and Let it cook for 2 minutes.set aside.
Step 4
Heat the oil in another kadai and add grated coconut,turmeric powder,coriander powder and chilli powder Let it cook for 2 minutes.
Step 5
Fry until coconut becomes brown.
Step 6
Grind this fried coconut in a mixer with 4 tsp water.
Step 7
Add this ground mix to chembu masala which is kept aside.
Step 8
Next, add 1 cup of water to this and let it bubble for 5minutes.
Step 9
Heat the oil in another kadai add mustard.when it allow to crackles add red chilly,onion and curry leaf.
Step 10
Add this tempering to chembu curry.
Step 11
Let it bubble for 2 minutes until gravy becomes thick.
Step 12
Now traditional chembu curry is ready to serve.
Tip
Coconut oil is the default cooking fat in Kerala kitchens. It adds a depth of flavour that other oils simply cannot match in these recipes.
