Tomato Thiyyal
A traditional preparation from Kerala that balances flavour, texture, and aroma in the way that only home cooking can. No two households make it exactly the same, and that is the point.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 3 nos Tomato
- Coconut — grated
- 2 tbsp Coriandar powder
- 1 tbsp Chilly powder
- 2 tbsp Coconut oil
- Salt, to taste
- Tamarind — soaked in 1/2 cup of water (Puli)
- Turmeric powder A pinch
- For seasoning
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 nos Small onions (Kunjulli)
- Curry leaves A, a few
- 2 nos Dry red chillies (Kollamulaku)
Preparation
Step 1
Fry the grated coconut using little oil on a low flame till it becomes golden brown.
Step 2
Add chilly powder and coriander powder and fry until you get a good aroma.
Step 3
Grind it to a fine paste.
Step 4
Heat up another pan.
Step 5
Fry the tomato pieces in a little oil.
Step 6
Add turmeric powder and continue frying.
Step 7
Add some tamarind solution and allow it to boil.
Step 8
Add enough salt too.
Step 9
Finally add the coconut paste and give it a good stir.
Step 10
Allow it to boil.
Step 11
Season the dish with FRIED(fry the seeds well before seasoning)mustard seeds, chopped small onions, dry red chilly and curry leaves.
Step 12
Serve this either as a side dish or as a main dish.
