Sweet Rice Balls
A traditional Kerala sweet that balances richness with restraint. Made with jaggery, coconut, and a careful hand, the sweetness is warm rather than overwhelming — the kind of flavour that lingers.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 1/2 kg Raw rice powder
- 200 g Groundnut paste — roasted
- 500 g Jaggery sharkara
- 500 g Banana — ground
- 200 g Coconut — grated
- 100 g Cashew nuts
- 1 tsp Cardamom — crushed
- 1 tsp Soda powder
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing sweet rice balls, caramelize the jaggery and strain it.
Step 2
Mix soda powder, rice powder and salt.
Step 3
Stir everything together thoroughly. Add cardamom, cashew nut, groundnut paste, coconut and banana.
Step 4
Add the jaggery and smooth batter.
Step 5
Keep the batter for 4 hours.
Step 6
Pour it in unniappa chatti and fry it. Sweet rice balls are ready.
Tip
Ghee quality matters enormously in traditional sweets. Use homemade ghee if you can — the flavour is incomparably richer.
