Spicy Kerala Fish Curry (Meen Curry)
Hot and Spicy Kerala Fish Curry (Meen Curry) will give a sumptuous treat to your taste buds. A variant from the usual fish curry, the dish incorporates tangy tamarind extract. Fish curry tastes best with hot rice or cooked tapioca.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 250 g Fish
- Tamarind A small ball in hot water (Puli)
- 1 nos Onions sliced, big
- 1 nos Tomato sliced, big
- Curry leaves A small bunch
- 3 tsp Red chilly powder
- 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1/4 tsp Fenugreek powder (Uluva)
- 2 tbsp Coconut oil
- 1/2" piece Ginger
- 4 nos Garlic pods
- Salt, to taste
- Mustard seeds A Pinch
- Fenugreek seeds A pinch (Uluva)
Preparation
Step 1
Clean the fish (Meen), drain and set aside.
Step 2
Mix together the red chilly powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and fenugreek powder with little water, to make a smooth paste.
Step 3
Warm the oil in a pan.
Step 4
Add mustard seeds and when they start allow to crackleing, add fenugreek seeds followed by the sliced onions, ginger, garlic, tomatoes, curry leaves and the paste and fry till the oil separates.

You could use a cup of small onions instead of big onions.
Step 6
Add a tsp of vinegar if desired. ( optional).
Step 7
Add tamarind extract and check the level of sourness.
Step 8
When the water starts boiling, add the fish pieces and salt.
Step 9
Add enough water to cover the pieces.
Step 10
Cook on a gentle heat.
Step 11
When the pieces are almost cooked, increase the heat and cook till the gravy thickens and the oil is visible.
Step 12
Serve while still hot with rice.

If u really think the Meen curry is too hot, reduce chilli/ or add two tea spoon of coconut milk.

When u make fish or meat curries, try to make the curry one day before, so that the Meen curry will absorb all that masala and taste better the next day.

If u like the smell of coriander leaves in your Meen curries, you can add some in this fish curry too.

Last but not the least, Kukum star (Kudampuli) is a very good substitute for tamarind in Meen Curry.

Tip
Taste the gravy before adding the main ingredient. It should be well-seasoned and balanced on its own — the protein or vegetable will dilute it slightly.
