Simple Prawn Curry with Coconut Milk without Oil
A simple, flavorful and tasty curry dish prepared from prawns, coconut milk and spice powders. What makes the dish special and unique is the total absence of oil that makes the dish very apt for those observing diet.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1/2 kg Fresh cleaned prawns
- 2 tsp Chilly powder
- 1 tsp Pepper powder
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- 1 tsp Ginger garlic paste
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 cup Coconut milk
- Salt, to taste
- 3 nos Kokum Kudampuli
Preparation
Step 1
Heat about 4 cups of water in a wok/kadai.
Step 2
Add the chilly powder, coriander powder, pepper powder, ginger garlic paste and turmeric powder.
Step 3
Let this sauce boil until it is reduced to half the quantity.
Step 4
(Note : soak the kokum in warm for about 15 minutes and make a paste. If you do not have kokum you can substitute it with Tamarind(Puli) pulp taken out of 1 big lemon sized ball of tamarind) Add the kokum/tamarind pulp to the sauce and let it boil until the kokum paste is well cooked and the raw smell disappears.
Step 5
Add the prawns and salt to taste.
Step 6
When the prawns curl up and is done, add the coconut milk and simmer for about 5 minutes and then switch off the stove.
Step 7
Goes well with plain rice and papad.
Step 8
This is a healthy dish since there is no oil used.
Tip
For a thicker gravy, cook uncovered on medium heat for the last few minutes. For a thinner consistency, add a splash of warm water.
