Raw Papaya Thoran | Green Papaya Thoran | Kaplanga Thoran
Finely chopped mixed stir-fried with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves — this thoran is the workhorse of the Kerala meal. Quick to make, always welcome on the banana leaf alongside rice and sambar.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1 nos Unripe green papaya(small) Peel off skin, take out seeds and chop into small pieces, small and firm
- 1 nos Onion (Thinly sliced
- 1 nos Garlic clove
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
- Curry leaves, a few
- Mustard seeds — for tempering
- 1 cup Coconut — grated
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 2 nos Green chillies
- Salt, to taste
- 1 tbsp Oil
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing the delicious Green Papaya Stir Fry, first pressure cook green papaya pieces with turmeric and salt in little water (approximately 3 whistles). Or you can cook it covered in a vessel along with turmeric powder and salt, till done. Papaya pieces should not be over cooked.
Step 2
Grind together coconut, garlic, green chilly and cumin to a coarse mixture. Heat the oil in a pan or a kadai. let the mustard seeds crackle and cook curry leaves.
Step 3
Fry onion till golden brown.
Step 4
Add green papaya pieces and coconut mixture and cook till all the water is gone.
Step 5
When cooked, green papaya should neither be too soft nor too hard. The nutritious dish should be served hot with rice.the healthy and Dish with your family. Chart out this dish in your weekly menu and note that it should be prepared at least once a week.
Tip
Grated coconut goes in last and cooks just long enough to warm through. Overcooking makes it chewy instead of soft.
