Raw Banana Thoran
Simple, honest, and on every Kerala lunch plate — banana thoran is coconut oil, grated coconut, and a handful of spices working quietly together. No fuss, just good food.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 2 nos Raw banana
- 1 nos Onion chopped, small
- 2 nos Green chillies
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds Jeera
- 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 nos Whole red chilly
- 1/4 tsp Chilly powder
- Turmeric A pinch
- Ginger — chopped
- Curry leaves, a few
- 2 tbsp Coconut — grated
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing raw banana thoran, first cut the raw banana into small pieces. Wash well and drain.
Step 2
Add salt, turmeric and chilly powder. Add little water and cook. Set aside when done.
Step 3
In a wok or kadai, heat oil and aplutter mustard seeds, whole red chilly, curry leaves, cut onions, green chillies, ginger and then add the cooked raw banana and grated coconut. cook well.
Step 4
Banana Thoran is ready.
Tip
The pan should be completely dry when you finish — no moisture should remain. That dryness is what gives thoran its characteristic texture.
