Prawns Theeyal (Chemmeen)
Chemmeen Theeyal or Prawns Theeyal is a prawns preparation with roasted coconut gravy. It is a good accompaniment with rice. This is a very famous and mostly wanted in the state of Kerala.
Ingredientsfor 8 servings
- 1 kg Prawns
- 1/4 kg Shallots — thinly sliced
- 4 nos Green chillies — chopped
- 1 nos Coconut grated, medium size
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Chilli powder
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp Fenugreek powder — roasted
- 1/4 cup Tamarind pulp
- Salt, to taste
- 3 tbsp Coconut oil
- 1 tsp Mustard
- 2 nos Dry red chillies
- 2 sprig Curry leaves
Preparation
Step 1
Clean and wash prawns.
Step 2
Dry roast grated coconut till it goes golden brown.
Step 3
Next, add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and fenugreek powder.
Step 4
Roast for 2 more minutes in a low flame and remove from fire.
Step 5
After cooling this roasted coconut mixture, grind it into a fine paste.
Step 6
Warm the oil in a pan, allow to crackle mustard, add curry leaves and dry red chillies.
Step 7
Cook sliced shallots and chopped green chillies till shallots turn soft.
Step 8
Add prawns and cook for a while.
Step 9
Add the roasted coconut paste along with tamarind pulp, salt and required quantity of water. 10)Cook the dish in a medium flame till it reaches the required consistency.
Step 10
Remove from fire and serve hot with rice.
Tip
A clay pot gives fish curry a distinctive taste that metal pans cannot replicate. If you have a manchatti, use it.
