Pidi Kozhakkatta With Red Cow Peas
A home-style Kerala dish made with care and the kind of spice knowledge that comes from watching someone else cook it a hundred times. Each step matters, and the result is worth the effort.
Ingredientsfor 5 servings
- 2 cup Rice flour
- 3/4 cup Red cow peas Vanpayar
- 1 cup Coconut — grated
- 2 tsp Chilly powder
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 3 nos Green chillies
- 2 tsp Cumin seeds (Jeerakam)
- 2 tbsp Coconut oil
- Curry leaves, a few
- Salt, to taste
- Water, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing pidi kozhakkatta with red cow peas, first place the rice flour in a bowl and pour boiling water. Knead it well to make dough.
Step 2
Make small balls out of dough and set aside.
Step 3
Pressure cook the red cow peas till it is done.
Step 4
Get a thick bottomed deep kadai. Put the cooked red cow peas into it.
Step 5
Add turmeric powder, chilly powder, salt, little water and allow it to boil.
Step 6
Put the rice balls slowly into the kadai. Do not stir till it simmers.
Step 7
Reduce the flame till the rice balls are done.
Step 8
Grind coconut along with cumin seeds and green chilies to a smooth paste.
Step 9
Add the ground paste to the kadai. Stir and take it off the heat.
Step 10
Add coconut oil and a few curry leaves.
Step 11
Pidi kozhakkatta with red cow peas, a recipe is ready.
Tip
When the recipe says "medium heat," it means medium. Kerala cooking is not about high-flame drama — most of the work happens at a patient, steady temperature.
