Parippu Vada | Dal Vada | Masala Vada
A tea time snack prepared from soaked lentils. A very common snack in South Indian Cuisine and people are generally addictive. Also termed Dal Vada, the snack goes perfectly fine with chutney.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 2 cup Red gram (Thuvaraparippu)
- 1 cup Masoor dal
- 2 Stems Curry leaves
- Onion, to taste
- Ginger, to taste
- Green chillies, to taste
- Asafoetida powder, as needed
- Red pepper powder, to taste
- Salt, to taste
- Oil — for frying
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing the delicious snack, wash and soak dal separately for four hours.
Step 2
Drain the dals in a colandar for 1 hour. There should be hardly any water left on the dal. If the dal is too wet, the vada will break apart.
Step 3
Pat the dal dry with a paper towel.
Step 4
With a food processor, the grinding will be easy. Grind the dals separately and make a paste.
Step 5
In the last portion of your grinding (if you have a food processor), add the onions, ginger and curry leaves, so they get minced further.
Step 6
Stir everything together thoroughly the whole mixture.
Step 7
Add asoefetida powder, salt and powdered red pepper for taste.
Step 8
Shape into patties and fry in hot oil till the snack become golden brown.
Step 9
The Tea time snack is ready.
Step 10
Serve the dish with coconut chutney.
Tip
The binding point is everything — cook the mixture just until it holds shape when pressed. Overcooked, it turns hard; undercooked, it crumbles.
