Onion Uthappam (Oothappam)
A Kerala breakfast classic with its characteristic soft, fluffy middle and paper-thin, crispy edges. The fermented batter gives it a gentle sourness that balances rich curries.

- Ingredients for Onion Uthappam
- 2 cup Idli Batter
- 4 nos Onions medium
- 3 - Green chillies
- 1 inch Ginger
- Oil, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Mix together the idli batter, chopped onions, minced chillies and minced ginger.
Step 2
Give it a good stir to form a thick batter.
Step 3
Spread 1 big spoonful of it to a heated frying pan to make Onion Uthappam. When the base is golden brown, turn the side and cook well.
Step 4
Note: Pls see the recipe of idli to make the required idli batter.
Tip
The swirling motion takes practice. Your first two appams will likely be imperfect — consider them warm-up rounds.
