Nadan Fish Biriyani (Meen Biryani)
one of the most biriyani dish from North Kerala. It is a colourful dish made of rice, spices, fish. It is the best lunch on holidays.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 6 piece Fish
- 4 cup Rice — washed
- 2 tsp Chilly powder
- 1 tsp Turmeric
- 3 nos Onions
- 2 nos Green chillies
- 1 tsp Ginger paste
- 1 tsp Garlic paste
- 1 nos Tomato
- 1 tsp Garam masala
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp Fennel powder
- Pepper powder — optional
- 1/2 cup Yogurt
- 1 cup Coriander leaves
- 1 tsp Fenugreek leaves — optional
- 1 Spring Curry leaves — optional
- 6 cup Water
- 3 tbsp Oil
- Ghee, to taste
- 1 nos Cinnamon — optional
- 2 nos Cardamom — optional
- 2 nos Cloves — optional
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing nadan fish biriyani, marinate fish pieces with chilly powder, turmeric powder and salt for 1/2 an hour.

2)Heat the oil in a pan and fry the marinated fish pieces.
Step 3
Remove the fish from the pan. Add green chillies, onion and curry leave to the same oil. cook well for 5 to 10 minutes.
Step 4
After it is done add ginger paste and garlic paste. cook it, stirring for some time.
Step 5
Toss in the tomato till done.
Step 6
Cook in turmeric, coriander powder, garam masala, fennel powder, pepper powder, fenugreek leaves and salt.
Step 7
After 3 minutes, add yogurt and coriander leaves. Mix it well.
Step 8
Now toss in the fried fish to the masala. Cover the fish with the masala. Close the lid for some time and then take it off the heat.
Step 9
For the rice, boil water with salt, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and 1tsp ghee/oil.
Step 10
Next, add the rice and pressure let it go for 2 whistles.
Step 11
Layer: - 11)Take a big vessel and add 1 tsp of ghee around the vessel.
Step 12
Next, add in the prepared fish masala.
Step 13
After that add some rice over it and sprinkle a pinch of garam masala, ghee, coriander leaves.
Step 14
Repeat the process till all the rice and the masale is over.
Step 15
After that close the lid and heat it for five minutes on low heat.
Step 16
When the lid become hot take it off the heat.
Step 17
Open the lid, and finally add 1 tsp ghee into the biriyani.
Step 18
Nadan fish biriyani is ready. Serve with cucumber or onoin raita.

Note: 1)You can add spices according to your taste.
Step 20
Increase the ghee or oil if you like.
Tip
Soak the rice for at least 30 minutes before cooking — this ensures each grain cooks evenly and stays separate in the final dish.
