Mutton Stew - Kerala Traditional
A gentle, coconut milk-based stew with soft vegetables and whole spices floating in a pale, fragrant broth. Kerala stew is quiet comfort food — not loud with chilli, but warm with cardamom and black pepper.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1/2 kg Mutton medium pieces
- 4 nos Onion
- 2 nos Potato
- 1 large Ginger
- Green chillies
- Salt
- Curry leaves
- 1 tbsp Coriander powder
- 1 And Coconut milk
- 3 tbsp Coconut oil
Preparation
Step 1
Wash mutton pieces and set aside to drain water.
Step 2
In a pressure cooker,add 2 table spoon of coconut oil and mix it till onion changes its color to golden brown.
Step 3
Add potatoes, ginger,green chillies and curry leaves let it Let it cook for 10 minutes.
Step 4
Add mutton pieces, coriander power and leave it on flame till full water from mutton drains.
Step 5
Add coconuts second milk,salt and wait till 4 whistles in high flame and keep it in low flame for 15-20 minutes.
Step 6
Afterwards open the pressure cooker and add coconuts first milk in low flame.
Step 7
Let it let it bubble for 5 minutes and add one spoon of coconut oil.
Step 8
Mutton Stew is ready!

Serve the Mutton Stew with palappam,dosa,vellepam or puttu!

Tip
Low and slow is the only way with mutton. Rushing the cooking gives you tough, chewy meat instead of fork-tender pieces.
