Mutta(egg) Avial
A medley of vegetables cut into long batons, simmered until just tender, and bound with a rough-ground coconut paste and a spoonful of yogurt. Avial is the centrepiece of the Kerala Sadya and arguably its most loved dish.
Ingredientsfor 2 servings
- 2 nos Eggs hard boiled and cut in half
- 1/2 cup Coconut — grated
- 3-4 Cloves Garlic
- 1 nos Tomatoes
- 1 nos Potatoes — cut into big slices
- 1 nos Drum stick — cut into small pieces, muringakka
- 2 nos Green chillies — slit
- 2 sprig Curry leaves
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Chilly powder
- 1 tbsp Oil
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Grind grated coconut, garlic cloves, chilly powder and turmeric powder.
Step 2
Add potatoes, drumstick and tomatoes into the grated mixture.
Step 3
Add required water and salt.
Step 4
Let it cook for 15 minutes.
Step 5
Add the egg pieces into it.
Step 6
Let it go for 5 minutes.
Step 7
Add oil and curry leaves into it.
Tip
Hard-boil the eggs first, then make shallow cuts on the surface before adding them to the gravy — this lets the masala flavour penetrate inside.
