Kerala Style Fish Masala - Nadan Style
A traditional Kerala sweet snack made with care and a generous hand of ghee. The kind of thing grandmothers make for festivals and grandchildren make excuses to visit for.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 500 g Fish cleaned and — cut into medium pieces
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Red chilly powder
- 1 tbsp Lemon juice
- 2 nos Onion chopped finely
- 1 nos Tomato chopped finely
- 1/2 cup Tomato pulp
- 1 tsp Ginger paste
- 1 tsp Garlic paste
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Red chilly powder
- 1 tsp Cumin powder (Jeerakam)
- 1 tsp Coriander powder
- 1 tsp Garam masala powder
- 3 tbsp Oil
- Salt, to taste
- Coriander leaves — for garnishing
- 1/4 cup Coconut — grated
Preparation
Step 1
Marinate the fish with turmeric powder, chilly powder and lime juice for 1/2 hr.
Step 2
Warm the oil in a pan.
Step 3
Fry onion till goden brown.
Step 4
Add ginger-garlic paste and cook for about 2 minutes.
Step 5
Add tomatoes and cook for about 3 minutes.
Step 6
Add pulp and all the powders and salt.
Step 7
Cook till oil separates.
Step 8
Add 1 cup of water.
Step 9
Add fish and cook till fish is done.
Step 10
Don`t overcook the fish.
Step 11
Get in a bowl.
Step 12
Garnish with grated coconut and coriander leaves.
Step 13
Goes well with rice.
Step 14
If needed, little tamarind pulp and coconut milk can be added. But the gravy has to be thick.
Tip
Jaggery burns easily. Melt it on low heat and always strain it to remove grit before adding it to the mixture.
