Kerala Parippu Curry | Parippu Curry
A Sadhya styled dish, very popular in Kerala. The spicy, aromatic dish is a favorite with all especially kids.
Ingredientsfor 2 servings
- 1 cup Red gram (Thuvaraparippu)
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds (Jeerakam)
- 5 nos Garlic cloves
- 5 nos Green chillies
- 1/2 cup Coconut — grated
- 2 sprig Curry leaves
- 2 tsp Coconut oil
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing the healthy dish, first pressure cook red gram dal in sufficient water, along with salt and turmeric powder. Cook until soft.
Step 2
Meanwhile, grind coconut into a fine paste with green chillies, garlic & cumin seeds.
Step 3
Add this paste into the cooked dal.
Step 4
Cook again for 2 - 3 minutes in low flame until the raw smell of coconut goes away. You can also skip the addition of raw coconut if you do not like the taste of coconut.
Step 5
Stir in 2 tsp of coconut oil and a few curry leaves to the parippu curry and give it a good stir.
Step 6
Serve the dish with hot rice and ghee. The dish is very nutritious and healthy especially for growing up kids.

Tip
For a thicker gravy, cook uncovered on medium heat for the last few minutes. For a thinner consistency, add a splash of warm water.
