Kadala Payasam (Chana Dal Kheer)
Sweet Dessert made of chana dal (kadalapparippu) and jaggery.
Ingredientsfor 8 servings
- 2 cup Chana dal kadalapparippu
- 2 cup Jaggery syrup
- 3 cup Coconut milk II extract thin
- 2 cup Coconut milk I extract thick
- 1 tsp Cardamom powder
- 4 tbsp Ghee
- 1/2 cup Coconut flakes
- 50 g Cashew nuts
Preparation
Step 1
Pressure cook chana dal. :- Make sure the dal is cooked well but not mashed.
Step 2
Crush the cooked chana dal in a mixer. :- Do not grind it into a paste, just crush it lightly.
Step 3
In a heavy bottom vessel, boil the jaggery syrup and mix in crushed, cooked dal.
Step 4
Mix it well till the crushed dal absorbs the syrup well and reaches a thick consistency.
Step 5
Add the 2nd extract of coconut milk, Stir everything together thoroughly and cook on low heat.
Step 6
When it starts thickening, add the Ist extract of coconut milk, Stir everything together thoroughly and take it off the heat. :- Make sure the dish does not come to a boil after adding the Ist extract of coconut milk.
Step 7
Sprinkle cardamom powder over the payasam.
Step 8
Heat ghee in a pan and fry coconut flakes till it becomes golden brown.
Step 9
Drain it and sprinkle it over the payasam.
Step 10
In the remaining ghee, fry cashew nuts and sprinkle it along with the ghee over the payasam.
Step 11
Kadala Payasam is ready to serve!
Tip
The payasam will thicken significantly as it cools. Stop cooking when it is still slightly thinner than your target consistency.
