Kadachakka Upperi | Breadfruit Upperi
A styled dish, very popular in Kerala. Kadachakka, also termed Breadfruit is a seasonal fruit and very widely cultivated in Kerala. Almost all houses have a breadfruit tree in its backyard.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- Kadachakka (Breadfruit) : 1 no
- Onion : 1/2 cup — chopped
- Red Chilli Powder : 2 tsp
- Salt, to taste
- 5 tsp Coriander powder : 4
- 10 Leaves Curry leaves : 8
- Turmeric Powder: 1 tsp
- 5 tsp Coconut / refined oil : 4
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing the delicious dish, first peel the Kadachakka, cut it into 4 lengthy pieces and remove the core (Koonju) and then cut them further into small pieces as shown in the below picture.
Step 2
Heat the oil in a frying pan.
Step 3
Add the chopped onion into the oil and stir it.
Step 4
Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chilli powder, curry leaves and salt.
Step 5
Stir the Stir everything together thoroughly for about five minutes.
Step 6
Wash the kadachakka pieces and then add it into the hot masala mix.
Step 7
Stir the Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 8
Add some water (preferably equal to the level of pieces) and stir it further and close it with a lid and allow to cook the kadachakka pieces properly.
Step 9
When the kadachakka pieces are cooked well, turn off the heat and stir the upperi for 1 – 2 minutes.
Step 10
Kadachakka upperi is ready and it can be served with chappathi / poori / cooked rice / Kanji etc.
Tip
Shred the vegetable as fine as you can — the thinner the cuts, the better the thoran. A sharp knife makes all the difference.
