Fish Masala In Coconut Milk
Fresh fish cooked the Kerala way — with coconut, curry leaves, and a tartness that comes from kudampuli or tamarind. Coastal Kerala cooking at its simplest and best.
Ingredientsfor 5 servings
- 500 g Fish even sized pieces, Any fleshy fish
- 4 nos Onion — finely sliced
- 3 Cloves Garlic — crushed
- 1/2 tsp Fennel seeds — powdered (Perinjeerakam)
- 1 nos Tomato — chopped
- 3 nos Green chillies — slit
- 1/4 tsp Pepper powder
- 1 tbsp Chilly powder
- 1/2 tbsp Coriander powder
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- Coconut milk Of half a coconut
- Curry leaves, a few
- 1 cup Water
- Oil, to taste
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing fish masala in coconut milk, first Heat the oil in a pan and fry sliced onions.
Step 2
Add crushed garlic, green chillies, curry leaves and cook for a few seconds.
Step 3
Add turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder, fennel seed powder and fry in low flame.
Step 4
When a frying smell comes, add chopped tomatoes and fry well.
Step 5
Add 1 cup water and required salt. Bring the fish curry to a boil and add the fish pieces.
Step 6
Cook in low flame with a covered lid till the fish pieces are done.
Step 7
When the gravy has acquired a thick consistency, add pepper powder and coconut milk.
Step 8
Stir slowly and heat in low heat. Remove the vessel from flame before boiling starts.
Step 9
Fish masala in coconut milk, a Recipe, is ready.
Tip
Never stir a fish curry with a spoon. Shake the pot gently to coat the pieces — stirring breaks them apart.
