Easy Vermicelli Upma - Healthy Breakfast
Straightforward Kerala cooking — good ingredients treated well, spiced with confidence, and served without pretence. The kind of food that tastes like someone's kitchen, not a restaurant.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 100 g Vermicelli Semiya
- 1/2 cup Sprouted green gram cherupayar
- 1/2 cup Onion — finely chopped
- 1/2 cup Tomatoes — finely chopped
- 1/2 cup Cooked green peas
- 2 nos Green chillies — finely chopped
- Curry leaves, a few
- Turmeric powder A pinch
- Mustard seeds, a few
- Split black gram Few parippu (Uzhunnu)
- Split bengal gram Few, Kadala parippu
- OIl, to taste
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Warm the oil in a pan and let the mustard seeds crackle, uzhunnu parippu and kadala parippu. cook until golden in color.
Step 2
Add chopped onions, green chillies and curry leaves. fry until onion becomes transparent.
Step 3
Add chopped tomatoes and cooked green peas. cook in low heat.
Step 4
Add turmeric powder and required salt. Pour 2 cups water and leave it to boil.
Step 5
When water starts boiling, lower the heat and add roasted vermicelli. Cook until done.
Step 6
Sprinkle sprouted cherupayar and stir gently until water has evaporated completely.
Step 7
Easy Vermicelli upma, an ideal breakfast dish is ready. Serve hot.
Tip
When the recipe says "medium heat," it means medium. Kerala cooking is not about high-flame drama — most of the work happens at a patient, steady temperature.
