Easy Vazhapoo Thoran
A styled dish prepared from banana flowers. A very popular dish in Kerala, God's Own Country. Easy Vazhapoo Thoran tastes best with hot rice and can be easily prepared at home.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1 nos Banana flower/vazhapoo — chopped
- 1 nos Coconut — grated
- 3 nos Green chillies slit/chopped
- 15 nos Shallots — finely chopped (Kunjulli)
- 1 small Ginger — grated
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- Salt, to taste
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 nos Dry red chillies
- Curry leaves, a few
- Coconut oil, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Easy Vazhapoo Thoran or banana thoran, first take the layers of vazhapoo and chop it finely.
Step 2
Soak it in water with turmeric(can use curd also) for sometime and clean, drain and set aside.
Step 3
In a bowl mix shallots, green chillies, ginger, turmeric powder, little curry leaves and 1 tsp coconut oil.
Step 4
Heat the oil in pan, let the mustard seeds crackle, dry chillies.
Step 5
Add the shallots mixture and fry for some time.
Step 6
Add the banana flower and Stir everything together thoroughly. Cover it with lid and cook for sometime.
Step 7
When the flower is almost done, add the grated coconut and fry for some time.
Step 8
When done, pour little oil on top.
Step 9
Add curry leaves and cover with lid.
Step 10
After 5 minutes serve hot.
Step 11
Easy vazhapoo thoran is ready.
Tip
The pan should be completely dry when you finish — no moisture should remain. That dryness is what gives thoran its characteristic texture.
