Drumstick Thoran
In Kerala you will never fail to observe a drumstick tree in backyard of Malayalee homes. A simple, very healthy side dish that goes well with noon day meals. A unique dish traditionally prepared with grated coconut and other ingredients.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 10 nos Drumstick (Muringakkai)
- 1 nos Onion — cut into small pieces, big
- 4 nos Garlic cloves — crushed
- 3 nos Green chillies cut lengthwise or — finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- Cumin powder A pinch (Jeerakam)
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 1/4 cup Coconut — grated
- Mustard seeds A little
- Curry leaves A sprig
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Drumstick Thoran first cut the drumsticks lengthwise and remove the fleshy part with a spoon.
Step 2
Cut the scooped drumstick into small pieces and mix it with green chilly, garlic, cumin powder, onions, turmeric, curry leaves and salt and set aside for a while.
Step 3
Set a pan over medium heat and pour in the oil.
Step 4
Let the mustard seeds crackle followed by curry leaves and put the drumstick mix into this pan.
Step 5
Cook on low or medium flame for a while by covering the lid till cooked.
Step 6
Check ocassionally to make sure it doesn`t get overcooked.
Step 7
Once cooked, remove the lid and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 8
Add the grated coconut on top and mix again. Cover the vessel and reduce to low flame.
Step 9
After a minute, remove pan from flame.
Step 10
Serve delicious Drumstick Thoran with plain rice.
Tip
This same method works for almost any vegetable: beans, beetroot, carrot, raw banana — swap the main vegetable and keep everything else the same.
