Chicken Thoran(Eracchi Thoran)
Finely chopped chicken stir-fried with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves — this thoran is the workhorse of the Kerala meal. Quick to make, always welcome on the banana leaf alongside rice and sambar.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 2 Lb Chicken
- 1/2 cup Small onions cut in half (Kunjulli)
- 1/2 cup Water
- Salt, to taste
- 5 nos Cardamom
- 5 nos Cloves
- 5 nos Aniseeds
- Cinnamon (Karugapatta)
- Nutmeg etc
Preparation
Step 1
Clean the chicken and cut into small pieces.
Step 2
You can use boneless chicken too, but this will be If u use chicken with bones.
Step 3
To this chicken, add the ingredients mentioned for marination and mix all together.
Step 4
Add the salt and the small onions and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 5
Add water and cook on low heat till the chicken is all cooked and soft.
Step 6
Meanwhile, grind the ingredients mentioned for the gravy in a blender and set aside.
Step 7
Once the chicken is cooked, and the gravy is made, Heat the oil in a pan or a kadai.
Step 8
Let the mustard seeds crackle and cook red chillies.
Step 9
Add the dry gravy to this and fry for 1 min.
Step 10
Add the cooked chicken to it draining the water if any.
Step 11
Try to cook the chicken till there is no water left.
Step 12
Mix chicken and coconut gravy together and allow it to stay on low heat for 10 more minutes in the closed pan.

Tip
Bone-in chicken gives a richer, more flavourful gravy than boneless. The marrow flavours the curry as it cooks.
