Ingredientsfor 5 servings
- 3/4th of Green moong dal
- ½ cup Coconut — grated
- 2 Cloves garlic
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- ½ tsp Turmeric powder
- Chilli powder ¾ tsp
- Salt, to taste
- 1 cup Water
- Curry leaves, a few
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing the delicious and traditional styled dish, first wash and soak the moong dal in water for around 5- 6 hrs.
Step 2
Drain the water used for soaking, and cook the dal in fresh water. Close and cook on medium-low heat till the moong dal is soft. Make sure that the dal doesn’t overcook and turn mushy.
Step 3
While it is cooking, make the coconut mixture by mixing together the grated coconut, chopped garlic, cumin seeds, turmeric powder and chili powder.
Step 4
You can also grind in a mixer to a coarse mixture. Stir in the coconut mixture into the cooked green gram. Turn to low flame and cover with a lid.
Step 5
Keep the 'thoran' in low flame for another 5-7 minutes. Remove the lid and stir fry the dish. Serve the dish with rice and curd.
Tip
Shred the vegetable as fine as you can — the thinner the cuts, the better the thoran. A sharp knife makes all the difference.
