Chemmeen Ularthiyathu
A spicy and sea food dish, very popular in God's Own Country which is rich in vast coastal areas. It is the unique and spicy blend of natural spices that makes the dish unique and interesting.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 500 g Prawns small or medium sized, Chemmeen
- 2 nos Onions thinly sliced, big
- 1 nos Tomato — finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 11/2 tbsp Red chilly powder
- 5 nos Green chillies — cut into half lengthwise & deseeded
- 1 Stem Curry leaves
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing the delicious Chemmeen Ularthiyathu, first remove shell and tail of prawns, Wash well and strain.
Step 2
Cook prawns along with some salt in very little water, till the colour of the prawns changes into reddish pink. Give it a stir now and then. (Approx. 6-8 minutes).
Step 3
Do not overcook the prawns, since overcooking will make the prawns hard.
Step 4
Heat 3 - 4 tbsp of oil in a pan.
Step 5
Cook chopped onions, till lightly browned.
Step 6
Add turmeric powder and give it a good stir.
Step 7
Add chilly powder and stir on a low flame for less than a minute.
Step 8
Add chopped tomatoes and cook on medium heat, till it becomes thick gravy like and separates from oil.
Step 9
Add curry leaves and prawns along with the remaining water of the cooked prawns, if any.
Step 10
If no water is left, add 1 - 2 tbsp of water.
Step 11
Stir for a few minutes, till the gravy becomes thick.
Step 12
Add the green chillies.
Step 13
Add more salt, if necessary.
Step 14
Serve the Dish hot with rice.
Tip
Patience at the dry-roasting stage is everything. The longer you let the moisture evaporate, the more concentrated the flavour becomes.
