Chakkakkuru Pavakka Mezhukkupuratti
Finely chopped jackfruit stir-fried with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves — this thoran is the workhorse of the Kerala meal. Quick to make, always welcome on the banana leaf alongside rice and sambar.
Ingredientsfor 2 servings
- 1 cup Pavakka — cut into thin slices, bittergourd
- 1 cup Chakkakkuru — cut into thin pieces, jackfruit seeds
- 5 nos Small onions (Kunjulli)
- 3 nos Red chillies (Kollamulaku)
- 1 nos Onion chopped, big
- 3/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp Chilly powder
- 3 tsp Coconut oil
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Cook the bittergourd pieces and jackfruit seed pieces along with turmeric powder, chilly powder & salt, until they are well cooked.
Step 2
If water is left after cooking, drain it.
Step 3
Make a paste of small onions & red chillies.
Step 4
Warm the oil in a pan.
Step 5
Fry the onion-chilly paste in it.
Step 6
Add the cooked bitter gourd & jack fruit seed pieces into it. give it a good stir.
Step 7
Fry the big onion pieces in oil, until they goes golden brown and add this to the above.
Step 8
Serve while still hot with rice.
Tip
Grated coconut goes in last and cooks just long enough to warm through. Overcooking makes it chewy instead of soft.
