Chakka Upperi
A classic Kerala thoran where jackfruit meets freshly grated coconut in a quick, dry stir-fry. Mustard seeds crackle in coconut oil, curry leaves crisp up, and the whole thing comes together in minutes.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 15 nos Pachha chakka chula : 10 Raw jackfruit flesh
- Salt, to taste
- Turmeric powder : ½ tsp (only if required
- Green chilli powder : 1 tsp
- Onion : ½ cup — chopped
- Coconut / refined oil, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Remove the chakka chula (raw jackfruit flesh) from the chakka ( jackfruit), clean and cut into small pieces as shown in below.
Step 2
Heat the oil in a frying pan and put the chopped onion along with turmeric powder into the oil and stir it for 4 - 5 minutes.
Step 3
When the colour of onion turns into golden, add some salt and chilli powder and stir it well.
Step 4
Add the chakka chula pieces into the mix and stir it well.
Step 5
Enter Step.
Step 6
If required add about ¼ cup of water in this mix.
Step 7
Cover the mix and allow to cook it in steam for about 10 -15 minutes (or till it gets cooked well).
Step 8
Chakka Upperi is ready and it can be served as side dish for poori / chappathi or can be served with tea / coffee / butter milk etc.
Tip
Shred the vegetable as fine as you can — the thinner the cuts, the better the thoran. A sharp knife makes all the difference.
