Cabbage Parippu Thoran | Cabbage with Lentils
Finely chopped cabbage stir-fried with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves — this thoran is the workhorse of the Kerala meal. Quick to make, always welcome on the banana leaf alongside rice and sambar.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1 small Cabbage
- ¼ cup Masoor dhal /Toor dhal
- 2 nos Green chillies
- 5 nos Small onion
- Curry leaves
- ½ tsp Turmeric powder
- ¼ cup Coconut — grated
- 2 tbsp Coconut oil
- ½ tsp Mustard Seeds
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Cook dhal by adding a pinch of turmeric powder and salt in enough water.
Step 2
Get a blender and crush shallots, green chilly and curry leaves.
Step 3
Add it into the thinly sliced cabbage. Add grated coconut also.
Step 4
Add turmeric powder and salt to taste. Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 5
Set a pan over medium heat and pour in the oil, let the mustard seeds crackle followed by a few curry leaves.
Step 6
Add the cabbage mix and Fold everything together gently. Cover and Continue cooking for 6 to 7 minutes on medium heat. Give it a stir now and then.
Step 7
When the cabbage is well cooked, add the cooked dhal.
Step 8
Fold everything together gently and cook for another 2 minutes. take it off the heat.
Step 9
Serve alongside steamed rice.
Tip
Grated coconut goes in last and cooks just long enough to warm through. Overcooking makes it chewy instead of soft.
