Cabbage And Cherupayar Thoran
Finely chopped cabbage stir-fried with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves — this thoran is the workhorse of the Kerala meal. Quick to make, always welcome on the banana leaf alongside rice and sambar.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 1 nos Cabbage chopped, small size
- 1/2 Bowl Cherupayyar cooked, Green Gram
- 1 nos Onion
- 4 nos Green Chilly
- 1/2 Bowl Grated Coconut
- Curry leaf, to taste
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- Salt, to taste
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- Oil, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
In a bowl put chopped cabbage, cooked cherupayyar,chopped onion,green chilly chopped,grated coconut,turmeric powder,salt and mix all together with your hand.
Step 2
Pour oil into a pan and heat it and add mustard seeds.
Step 3
When mustard seeds allow to crackleed, add curry leaf.
Step 4
Finally add the mashed ingredients in to it and cook in low flame for 5 to 10 mints.
Step 5
Serve while still hot as a side dish to rice or chappathi.
Step 6
Optional - you can add nicely diced or grated carrots in to this.
Tip
Grated coconut goes in last and cooks just long enough to warm through. Overcooking makes it chewy instead of soft.
