Brahmin Sambar Palakkad Style
A combo of nutritious veggies that goes well with rice, idli, dosa etc. The spicy, tangy and flavorful Brahmin Sambar is irresistible and tempting.
Ingredientsfor 6 servings
- 1 cup Sambar dal red gram dal
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 cup Water
- 1 piece Drum Stick
- 4 piece Ladies finger
- 3-4 nos Green chillies split into 2
- 2 nos Onion
- 2 nos Carrot
- 2 nos Tomato
- 1 nos Potato
- Tamarind size of a golf ball
- 2 tbsp Coriander seeds dried
- 1/4 tsp Fenugreek
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 4 nos Chilly dried
- 1/4 tsp Asafoetida powder
- 1 tsp Red chilly powder
- Salt, to taste
- 1 cup Water
- 2 tsp Coconut oil
- 2-3 nos Dried chillies split into two
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- Coriander leaves, a few
- 1/2 piece Coconut — grated
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Brahmin Sambar Palakkad Style, first clean the vegetables and slice into long pieces.
Step 2
Wash the dal, boil 3 cups of water and cook dal in it.
Step 3
Add turmeric powder and curry leaves into the dal and set aside.
Step 4
Fry the coriander seeds, fenugreek, turmeric powder, dried chilly, asafoetida powder and red chilly powder together in 1/2 tsp coconut oil.
Step 5
Grind it to a smooth paste and set aside.
Step 6
Mash the tamarind in 1 cup water and strain.
Step 7
Boil the tamarind water with red chilly powder, salt, curry leaves, asafoetida and molasses.
Step 8
Add the vegetables and cook till done. Then add the prepared dal and ground paste into it.
Step 9
Add the grated coconut and boil it.
Step 10
Season with mustard seeds and dried chillies.
Step 11
Sprinkle the chopped coriander leaves into it.
Step 12
Remove from fire after boiling well.
Step 13
Your Brahmin Sambar is ready! :- Serve the Brahmin`s Sambar in hot with Idly, Rice, Dosa etc! :- cooking Brahmin`s Sambar!
Tip
The coconut paste is what makes Kerala sambar distinct from Tamil sambar. Grind it fresh — packaged coconut does not have the same effect.
