Pavakka Thoran Easy
Pavakka Thoran is a Kerala style Bitter Gourd Curry cooked with lots of fresh coconut and in coconut oil for an touch and flavour. Pavakka or Bitter Gourd is a characteristic veggie with a bitter flavor.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 250 g Bitter gourd Pavakka
- 200 g Small onions (Kunjulli)
- Or
- 200 g Onion
- 1/2 Of Coconut
- 5 nos Green chillies
- 3 tbsp Coconut oil
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- Salt, to taste
- Curry leaves, a few
- 2 nos Dry red chillies (Kollamulaku)
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Pavakka Thoran, first clean the bitter gourd well and remove the seeds found inside it.
Step 2
Finely chop the pavakka.
Step 3
Mix together finely chopped pavakka, onions, green chillies, grated coconut, turmeric powder and salt.
Step 4
Warm the oil in a pan or a kadai.
Step 5
Let the mustard seeds crackle and cook dry red chillies and curry leaves.
Step 6
Add the pavakka-coconut mixture and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 7
Put the lid on and cook on a low flame.
Step 8
Give it a stir now and then.
Step 9
When it gets cooked, remove the lid and continue to cook, till Pavakka Thoran is done.
Tip
Grated coconut goes in last and cooks just long enough to warm through. Overcooking makes it chewy instead of soft.
