Pachakaya Mathi Kootaan | Raw Plantain Sardine Curry
A South Indian dish that combines the earthy flavors of raw plantains with the richness of sardines.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 3 nos Raw banana
- 1/4 tsp Chilli powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- Salt, to taste
- 1½ cup Coconut — grated
- 3 nos Garlic
- 1 tsp Fennel seeds (Perumjeerakam)
- 5 nos Shallots
- 3 nos Green chilly
- 2 nos Sardine
- Curry leaves, a few
- Water, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Peel and chop the plantains into pieces.
Step 2
In a pressure cooker, add cleaned raw banana, red chilly powder, turmeric powder, salt and cook adding 1½ cup of water. Cook for 3 whistles.
Step 3
Add 2 cleaned sardines and Continue cooking for 4 to 5 minutes.
Step 4
Remove the bones of the Sardine, add few curry leaves and stir the cooked sardine and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 5
Grind grated coconut, green chilli, fennel seeds, shallots and garlic by adding little water to a coarse mixture.
Step 6
Add this mixture to cooked plantain and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 7
Adjust the salt and Put the lid on and cook for 4-5 minutes at low flame.
Step 8
Goes well with rice or kanji.
Tip
Coconut oil and curry leaves at the very end, off the heat, give the curry its characteristic Kerala aroma. Never skip this final step.
