Oats Upma Easy
A home-style Kerala dish made with care and the kind of spice knowledge that comes from watching someone else cook it a hundred times. Each step matters, and the result is worth the effort.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1 cup Oats — powdered
- 1 cup Semolina roasted, Rawa
- 1 cup Spinach — finely chopped (Cheera)
- 1/2 cup Sprouted green gram Cherupayar
- 1 cup Drumstick leaves Muringa ela
- 2 nos Green chillies — chopped
- Ginger a small piece — finely chopped
- 1 cup Onion — finely chopped
- 1 tsp Split black gram parippu (Uzhunnu)
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 2 cup Water
- Oil, to taste
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Place a pan on the stove and pour oil. Heat the oil and let the mustard seeds crackle and uzhunnu parippu.
Step 2
Add chopped onions, green chillies, ginger, spinach and drumstick leaves. cook for sometime.
Step 3
Add 2 cups water and required salt. Leave it to boil.
Step 4
When it starts boiling, add roasted rawa and powdered oats. Cook in low heat until water evaporates completely.
Step 5
Sprinkle sprouted cherupayar on top.
Step 6
Stir and make sure that no lumps are formed.
Step 7
Oats upma, an ideal breakfast dish is ready. Serve hot.
Tip
When the recipe says "medium heat," it means medium. Kerala cooking is not about high-flame drama — most of the work happens at a patient, steady temperature.
