Meen Thakkali Curry
Rich, fragrant, and full-bodied — this fish curry gets its depth from slow-cooked shallots and a careful balance of chilli heat and tang. Serve with appam, rice, or porotta.
Ingredientsfor 6 servings
- 500 g Fish — cubed
- 1 nos Onion — chopped
- 1 nos Tomato — chopped
- 4 nos Small onion/Shallots (Kunjulli)
- 1/2 cup Coconut milk
- 1 tsp Chilly powder
- 1 tsp Fish masala
- Turmeric powder A pinch
- 1/2 tsp Ginger — grated
- 3 nos Cocum star Kudam (puli)
- 2 Springs Curry leaves
- Oil, to taste
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing meen thakkali curry, Heat the oil in a pan and let the mustard seeds crackle.
Step 2
Add onion, curry leaves and ginger. cook until the onion turns lightly browned.
Step 3
Next, add chilly powder, fish masala, turmeric powder and salt. cook until the oil starts to separate.
Step 4
Toss in the fish pieces and fry it lightly.
Step 5
Put in the tomato and curry leaves.
Step 6
Pour in the coconut milk, kudampuli and enough water. Stir it in intervals till the fish is done.
Step 7
Meen thakkali curry is ready. Serve hot with rice.
Tip
Taste the gravy before adding the main ingredient. It should be well-seasoned and balanced on its own — the protein or vegetable will dilute it slightly.
