Meen Mulakittath (Spicy Red Fish Curry)
Meen Mulakittath is a typical Malabar fish curry Fish curry is a hot favourite among Keralites Meen Mulakittath tastes best the day after it is prepared. In Malabar,they used tamarind pulp (Valanpuli),here I used kudampuli.
Ingredientsfor 5 servings
- 1/2 Fish fish of any kind
- 20 small Onion — finely chopped
- 1 medium Ginger — finely chopped
- 6 Pods Garlic — finely chopped
- 3 Green chilli
- 1/4 tsp Fenugreek seeds
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp Kashmiri chilli powder adjust according to ur choice
- 1/2 tsp Fennel powder
- 3-4 piece Tamarind
- 3 tbsp Coconut oil
- Curry leaves
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Clean and wash the fish and set aside. Warm coconut oil in a mud pot, allow to crackle fenugreek seeds,add shallots, garlic, ginger, green chillies,curry leaves and cook it, stirring well.
Step 2
Add turmeric powder, kashmiri chilli powder,fennel powder and cook it, stirring again till the raw smell goes away.
Step 3
Stir in 1 cup of water,tamarind,salt and Stir everything together thoroughly. When it starts to boil, add fish pieces.Cover and Let it cook for 10 minutes or until done.
Step 4
Meen Mulakittath is ready to serve. It goes well with boiled rice or boiled kappa.
Tip
For a thicker gravy, cook uncovered on medium heat for the last few minutes. For a thinner consistency, add a splash of warm water.
