Kerala Style Tasty Crab Masala
Fresh crab cooked the Kerala way — with coconut, curry leaves, and a tartness that comes from kudampuli or tamarind. Coastal Kerala cooking at its simplest and best.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 1/2 kg Crab — cut into big pieces and boiled with salt, turmeric powder and a little water
- 1 nos Onion sliced, big
- 1 nos Tomato sliced, big
- 1/2 tbsp Fennel seeds (Perumjeerakam)
- 1 tbsp Red chilly powder
- 2 tsp Coriander powder
- 2 nos Cloves (Grambu)
- 2 inch Cinnamon (Karugapatta)
- 1 tsp Ginger paste
- 1 tsp Garlic paste
- Oil, to taste
- Salt As req
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Crab masala, first grind one big onion, one big tomato, 1/2 tbsp perumjeerakam, 1 tbsp red chilly powder, 1 tbsp coriander powder in a mixie and set aside.
Step 2
In a frying pan, add 2-3 spoons of oil and heat.
Step 3
Add 2 cloves and 2″ cinnamon pieces.
Step 4
Add 1 tsp of ginger paste and 1 tsp of garlic paste. Fry well.
Step 5
Add one sliced onion and sauté. Add one tomato sliced to this and sautT well.
Step 6
Add the ground masala and fry till raw smell disappears.
Step 7
Add cooked crab and a few spoons of water and cook till the masala is thick.
Step 8
Kerala Style Crab masala is ready. Serve hot with chappathis, rotis or rice.
Tip
A clay pot gives fish curry a distinctive taste that metal pans cannot replicate. If you have a manchatti, use it.
