Cheerachembu Thoran | Tahitian Spinach Stir Fry
The taste of Cheerachembu Thoran | Tahitian Spinach Thoran, a nutritious Kerala-style stir fry made with fresh leafy greens and coconut.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 10 nos Chembu (Tahitian Spinach) Stems with Leaves (Cheera)
- 1/2 cup Coconut — grated
- 1/4 nos Shallots/Onion — chopped
- 3 tsp Green Chilli pieces
- 2-3 tsp Coconut/Refined Oil
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Collect Cheerachembu leaves to prepare a nutritious dish.
Step 2
Clean the leaves by removing the nerves from them. Also clean the stems by removing the skin.
Step 3
Then cut the leaves and stems into small pieces separately and keep them aside.
Step 4
Heat the oil in a Cheenachatti/Frying pan and add the Shallots/Onion pieces into hot oil along with chopped green chilli pieces and turmeric powder. give it a good stir.
Step 5
When colour of shallots/onion pieces turn into golden/brown, add the Cheerachembu leaves and Stir everything together thoroughly in low flame. After about 5 minutes add the stem pieces also along with required quantity of salt (if required add about 1 tsp and red chilli powder). Stir everything together thoroughly and cook the mix in medium flame.
Step 6
Next, add grated coconut into the cooked mix and stir it further. Cheerachembu Thoran is ready.
Step 7
This Thoran can be served with Chappathi/Poori/cooked Rice.
Tip
The pan should be completely dry when you finish — no moisture should remain. That dryness is what gives thoran its characteristic texture.
