Kerala Style Cherupayar Curry
This homestyle mixed curry is built on a foundation of shallots fried dark in coconut oil and spices toasted until they release their full aroma. It tastes even better the next morning, spooned over cold leftover rice.
Ingredientsfor 2 servings
- 1/2 cup Green gram Cherupayar
- 1 nos Onion finely chopped, large
- 1 nos Tomato finely chopped, large
- 2 nos Green chillies
- 21/2 tbsp Sambar powder
- Turmeric powder A pinch
- 1/4 cup Coconut milk
- Salt, to taste
- 2 - Oil
Preparation
Step 1
Soak daal overnight.
Step 2
Cook it in a pressure cooker.
Step 3
Pour oil into a pan and heat it or a kadai.
Step 4
Fry onion, until it becomes golden brown.
Step 5
Add green chillies and tomatoes and sauté.
Step 6
Add the cooked daal and a little water, if necessary.
Step 7
Add salt and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 8
Add turmeric powder and sambar powder.
Step 9
Give it a good stir and allow it to boil.
Step 10
Turn off the heat.
Step 11
Add coconut milk and give it a good stir.
Tip
Coconut oil and curry leaves at the very end, off the heat, give the curry its characteristic Kerala aroma. Never skip this final step.
