Jackfruit Payasam
A Kerala style payasam with soft and sweet tender jackfruit pieces, coconut milk and green gram. This is a healthy version of payasam with the addition of green gram.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 15 nos Pitted jackfruit pieces
- 2 cup Jaggery (Sharkkara)
- 1/2 cup Green gram Cheruparippu
- 2 Tins Coconut milk
Preparation
Step 1
Cut the jackfruit into small pieces.
Step 2
Cook it along with the green gram in a pressure cooker for about 7 minutes or upto 3 whistles.
Step 3
Heat up a pan or a kadai.
Step 4
Add jaggery and little water and allow it to boil.
Step 5
When it starts boiling, strain it to remove the dirt in the jaggery.
Step 6
Heat up another pan or a kadai.
Step 7
Add the strained jaggery syrup and allow it to boil.
Step 8
When it starts boiling, add the mashed dal and jackfruit pieces.
Step 9
When it starts to boil, lower the flame and give it a good stir using a spatula.
Step 10
When it starts forming a lump, add a tin of coconut milk mixed with 1 cup of water to it.
Step 11
Allow it to boil.
Step 12
When it boils well, take it off the heat.
Step 13
Add the other tin of coconut milk and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Tip
The payasam will thicken significantly as it cools. Stop cooking when it is still slightly thinner than your target consistency.
