Easy Onion Sambar
A hearty lentil stew loaded with vegetables, tangy tamarind, and a freshly ground spice paste — Kerala sambar is thicker and more coconut-forward than versions from other states. It gets ladled generously over rice at every meal.
Ingredientsfor 4 servings
- 500 g Onion
- 2 tsp Sambar powder
- 1 nos Tomato — chopped
- 100 g Daal Tuvara parippu
- 3 nos Green chillies — chopped
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- Salt, to taste
- Curry leaves, a few
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing easy onion sambar, cook daal with salt and turmeric powder.
Step 2
Fry onion, green chillies and tomato in oil.
Step 3
Add sambar powder, turmeric and water.
Step 4
Add cooked daal and Stir everything together thoroughly. cook mustard and curry leaves. Pour over gravy.
Step 5
Let it cook for 5 minutes.
Step 6
Easy onion sambar is ready.
Tip
The coconut paste is what makes Kerala sambar distinct from Tamil sambar. Grind it fresh — packaged coconut does not have the same effect.
