Chicken Thoran - A Traditional Dish
Finely chopped chicken stir-fried with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves — this thoran is the workhorse of the Kerala meal. Quick to make, always welcome on the banana leaf alongside rice and sambar.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 500 g Chicken — cut into small cubes
- 2 nos Onions
- 2 tsp Ginger & Garlic grinded little
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- Curry leaves, a few
- 2 tsp Coriander powder
- 1 tsp Chilli powder
- 2 nos Red chilli whole
- 1/2 tsp Garam masala powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 cup Coconut — grated
- 2 tbsp Coconut oil
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Pour oil into a kadai and heat it, add mustard seeds & allow it to allow to crackle.
Step 2
Add curry leaves & red chillies.
Step 3
Add onions, ginger & garlic and cook until brown in colour.
Step 4
Add chicken, required salt and cook for about 5 minutes.
Step 5
Close the lid and allow it to Continue cooking for 10 to 15 minutes.
Step 6
Mix grated coconut, coriander, turmeric, chilli, garam masala powder and add to the chicken.
Step 7
Close lid and cook for some more time.
Step 8
Serve while still hot!
Step 9
Note:- Do not grind the ginger & garlic to fine paste.
Tip
Do not boil the curry hard after adding coconut milk. A gentle simmer is all you need — vigorous boiling can cause the coconut milk to split.
