Banana Stem - Vazhapindi Thoran
Simple, honest, and on every Kerala lunch plate — banana thoran is coconut oil, grated coconut, and a handful of spices working quietly together. No fuss, just good food.
Ingredientsfor 3 servings
- 2 cup Vazhapindi /Banana stem — finely chopped
- 1/4 cup Rice boiled
- 12 nos Dry red chilies
- 1 tsp Turmeric powder
- 3 tbsp Coconut oil
- 1 tbsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tbsp Channa dal
- Curry leaves, a few
- Salt, to taste
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing vazhapindi thoran, first cut vazhapindi into roundels and simultaneously,loop its serum onto your fingers to discard it.
Step 2
Chop vazhapindi into fine pieces.
Step 3
Cook vazhapindi along with turmeric powder and salt. Set aside.
Step 4
Heat kadai pour 2 tbsps of oil. Add channa dal and mustard seeds. When mustard seeds allow to crackle add two red chilies and curry leaves.
Step 5
Stir in the cooked vazhapindi to it. Stir everything together thoroughly and set aside. Let it cool for a while.
Step 6
Dry roast the rice and the balance red chillies.
Step 7
Dry grind it in a mixer.
Step 8
Now spread this dry roast powder on to the vazhapindi and one tbsp of oil over it.
Step 9
Stir everything together thoroughly and serve.
Step 10
Vazhapindi thoran, a spicy side dish recipe is ready.
Tip
The pan should be completely dry when you finish — no moisture should remain. That dryness is what gives thoran its characteristic texture.
