Banana Flower Cutlet | Vazhachundu Cutlet
Crispy, crunchy and flavored Banana Flower Cutlet is irresistible and tempting. Kerala is a land of plantains and banana flowers are in plenty. This is a very nutritious and tasty dish that goes well with hot rice.
Ingredientsfor 6 servings
- 1 nos Vazhakkoombu Banana flower
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 2 nos Onion finely chopped, medium
- Ginger crushed) - 2 tbs
- 5 nos Green chillies — chopped
- 2 tbsp Curry leaves — chopped
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp Chilli powder
- 2 nos Potato boiled and mashed, medium
- Salt, to taste
- 1/2 tsp Garam masala
- 1/4 cup Coriander leaves — chopped
- 2 tbsp Maida Or 2 beaten eggs
- 2 cup Bread crumbs
- 2 cup Oil
Preparation
Step 1
For preparing Banana Flower Cutlet, first remove some of the outer hard purple petals of banana flower till you see the soft petals and flowers. Then finely chop it and rub it with hand by adding little oil (1 or 2 teaspoon) to remove the stain threads in it. Heat little oil in a pan and cook chopped banana flower for 5 minutes by adding little salt, turmeric powder and pepper powder. Remove from fire and set aside.
Step 2
Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan.
Step 3
Cook crushed ginger-garlic until softened. Now add chopped onion, green chillies and curry leaves and cook well by adding salt. When it has softened, add chilli powder and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 4
Stir in cooked vazhakkoombu and Stir everything together thoroughly.
Step 5
Add garam masala, chopped coriander leaves and remove from fire and allow it to cool.
Step 6
Cook the potato, peel the skin and mash it.
Step 7
Add the mashed potato to the vazhakkoombu mixture and mix it well.
Step 8
You can make the cutlet more tastier by adding little bread crumbs while mixing.
Step 9
Mix maida with little salt and add water to make a thin batter.
Step 10
Make balls out of the cutlet mix and shape it into oval shaped cutlets.
Step 11
Dip the cutlets in maida batter(make sure that the batter is so thin) or beaten egg, coat it with bread crumbs and fry it in oil.
Step 12
Serve Banana Flower Cutlet hot with tomato sauce.

Tips:- You can add boiled moong(Cherupayar) or sprouts / minced chicken or prawns or beef or mutton / scrambled egg / minced soya chunks / crushed paneer / chopped vegetables etc. Along with vazhakkoombu to give different version of vazhakkoombu cutlet. This cutlet is very good for kids because its nutrition value is high.
Tip
Hard-boil the eggs first, then make shallow cuts on the surface before adding them to the gravy — this lets the masala flavour penetrate inside.
